Fast & Easy slow cooker recipes

I think this is a great slow cooker cookbook! It has a lot of recipes, and sometimes several variations of similar things (like several different stew recipes, several different beef stroganoff recipes, etc). It must have a few hundred recipes or more. Each page has probably 4 or 5 recipes on it- it's really a LOT of recipes!! I like the variety and choice. It appears the recipes were submitted by individuals, and I find most of the meals are more 'traditional' meals. Many of the meals are hearty and heavy, and probably not the most health concious, but they definitely remind me of the kind of meals I grew up eating.

Most of the recipes involve very little prep work, and you can just sort of throw the ingrediants in and go. Some slow coooker cookbooks have you cook and prepare for 1 1/2 hours before you even start slow cooking- and that sort of defeats the purpose for me. I slow cook because I work a 9 hour day and commute 1 1/2 hours each way. After being gone 12 hours, and getting home late, I can't always cook a full meal. These recipes are so easy I can throw the ingrediants in the slow cooker at 10pm at night and put the slow cooker in the refrigerator overnight. Then, the next morning, I pull the slow cooker out of the fridge, plug it in and go to work. Dinner is ready by the time I get home.

This is a good beginner slow cooker cookbook. It doesn't have anything in it that I would call innovative or groundbreaking, but it's a good place to start. I have some other cookbooks with more unusual recipes in them (for example "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook") but I still prefer this one for just your basic slow cooker meal.

Majority of recipes not healthy (but some are), repetitive

I bought this book and I am not sure I would again. There are about 800 recipes in the book. There are 4 major drawbacks to this book. First -- A vast number of them do contain a LOT of cheese and fats (1 to 3 cups per recipe) and preprepared soups and soup mixes. Definitely not the healthy meals I try to prepare. Second -- There are multiple variations of the same recipe. How many times can you vary beef stew and beef vegetable soup and still call it a different recipe? This book does it about 50 times. Third -- the table of contents isn't detailed enough. You have to sift through 200 main dish recipes at a time. It would have been nice if there was some grouping such as 'beef main dishes, chicken main dishes, vegetarian main dises' etc. Fouth -- It could use a better overview section on the principles of slow cooking to cover such things as safety, keeping the crockpot at least 1/2 full, etc. Having said that I did go through and highlight the recipes that I would cook -- reasonble in fat and salt content. I found that there were only about 10% (excluding the repetitive ones) that I would use. Because of the 800 recipes to start with this still leaves me about 80. I tend to think of the value of a cookbook in how many recipes I get for the value. So this one ended up being 80 recipes for the cost of the book. That's not unreasonable. I do prefer Rick Roger's book. I compromise on both books. Roger's book is long on techinique and preparation, but much better on nutritional content and flavorings.

A Lifesaver

If you are a busy person, this cookbook is for you. It is chock-full of delicious recipes using basic, easy-to-find ingredients. It has been a lifesaver for me, a busy mom of two and a work-from-home mother. First thing in the morning, I put the ingredients into my crock pot, and at 5 p.m. when my husband arrives home, VOILA! Dinner is served. It has saved me during that "witching hour" with my baby when I am usually scrambling to get something on the table for dinner but he needs more time and attention. I give this book to all my friends who are expecting or who just had babies, because I know how helpful it has been to me. There are a wide variety of recipes represented as well as twists on old favorites (such as beef stew). There are appetizers, soups, vegetables, main dishes, meatless main dishes, desserts, and everything else you can imagine. Most of the ones I've seen are spiral-bound, which I would get because it lays flat on the countertop. I highly recommend this cookbook.
