Originally published in Paris in 1683, it ranked with the Bible as a best-seller in its time. Father Louis Hennepin (1640-1701?), Franciscan Recollect friar, made his famous exploring trip in 1679-80. The territory he saw and described is that now covered by the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. The name Louisiana then applied to the entire Mississippi Valley. In the course of his travels up the river, Hennepin saw Lake Pepin, saw and named the Falls of St. Anthony, went on a buffalo hunt, noted lakes, rivers, flora, and fauna. He and his companions were captured by the Sioux, taken to a village on Lake Mille Lacs in modern Minnesota, rather badly treated by the natives, and released only through the intervention of Du Lhut. The section on manners and customs of the Indians is especially entertaining."
