Though they contain a vein of coarseness and touch slightly upon tabooed subjects, they evidence power and thought.

Life, very real life, is pictured; life full of joys and sorrows, happinesses and heartbreaks, courage and self-sacrifice; of self-abnegation, of struggle, of victory. The characters are intense, yet not overdrawn ; the experiences are dramatic, in one sense or another, and yet are never hyper-emotional. And all is told with a power of concentration that is simply astonishing. A sentence does duty for a chapter, a paragraph for a picture of years of experience.
Indeed, for vigor, originality, forcefulness of expression, and completeness of character presentation, " Keynotes" surpasses any recent volume of short fiction that we can recall.
